Walter Francis Dark

Dear All

I am a researcher based in Sydney, Australia. I am trying to locate any surviving relatives or people who knew WALTER FRANCIS DARK. The belief is he was the individual born September 1890 in Barnstaple. He was an Alfred Holt (Blue Funnel) Ships Captain and his ships included the Titan which was sunk by Gunther Prien (U47) on 4 September 1940. He also captained the Ixion and Centaur and many others. Walter was married to Phyllis. Together the Darks ran a small hotel in Torquay. Subsequently the Darks moved up North and settled in Eastham on the Wirral. They had two children Phyllis and Victor. Phyllis worked for the Mobil Company in Birkenhead but has passed on (possibly in May 1984 - there is a record of a Phyllis Dark passing on at Birkenhead on this date). Victor went to university - (his fate is unknown although a VICTOR MARSHALL DARK died at Torridge, Devon, in January 2004 - this may be him). It is believed he never married and finished up in Cornwall (possibly farming). After Phyllis died it is believed Mrs Dark went to live with Victor. Walter was involved in an historically important maritme incident in Sydney in 1943. As he was born in Devon, his family spent much of their time there and as Dark is a very common surname in the area (there are about 54 in the phone directory!) I am sure someone must know something of him. I can be contacted on Geoff.Plunkett@gmail.com Many thanks.
