Can you help?
I am researching my family history.
My paternal side of the family were named HARRIS and were in the fishing industry at Sidmouth.
My Grandfather William John Harris born 1910, sidmouth (also known as "Tinko" or "Jack") was a fisherman & fish salesman in Sidmouth (1930s - 1976). He lived at 5 Rothshay cottages, Eatern Town, Sidmouth.
His father was John Harris ( also known as "Tink") who was a fisherman in Sidmouth and a lifeboat man on the "William and Francis" sidmouth life boat. John married Jane NORTON of Lympstone. They had the following children: -
Albert "Bert" Harris who married Victoria "Tori" NEWBERRY and lived at Manstone Avenue, Sidmouth.
Florence "Flo" HARRIS who married Victor KNIGHT.
James "Harold" HARRIS who moved to Ottery st. Mary.
Mabel "Hilda" HARRIS who married Jim McDonald and lived in Sidmouth
Lilian "Lil" HARRIS who moved to Dawlish
Percy HARRIS who died in the the 1920s of TB
William John HARRIS as above who married Nellie Fisher and lived at 51 York Street Sidmouth ( formerly 5 Rothshay Cottages) .
Redvers "Roofy" HARRIS who married Faye WOOLEY and lived at Riverside, Sidmouth.
Any help VERY MUCH APPRICIATED with any of the above people.
I knew both of the Harris boys Bert and we called him Jack. I was born in Sidmouth and my mate and I Terry Horn used to go and catch mackerel very often. when they used to shoot their Seine nets they used my boat as the mother boat, their drinking hole (a picture of which I use as my wall paper) was the swan. We used to have many a laugh on Sunday there where they partnered each other at Euchre and woe betide the other if one did the wrong thing . It was usually Bert that held the winning card and he would slam it on the table and shout for all of us to here Euchre if you get this my email address is
zulu6@geo.net.au
I now live in western Australia
cheers Chris Andrews
