New To Exmouth

Exmouthlady 21/01/2008, 9:19 AM

I moved to the Exmouth area last year from Plymouth. I wanted to make a fresh start in a better environment for my son. Im a divorced, single mum of 42. I don't work due to studying at home with Open University, which is quite restrictive when it comes to meeting new people.

I'd be interested in ideas on how its best to meet and make new friends in a new area. My son is at High School so I no longer do 'school runs' and my neighbours, while lovely, are elderly. Id like to meet people my own age for drinks/coffee/chats/walking the dog and so on.

I never believed that relocation and making new friends at this point in life would be so hard. Oh for a social life

Firstly, welcome to Exmouth!.

I am sure in time, after you have settled into your home and surroundings, you will be able to meet people and secure aquaintances or even make friends. Moving isn't easy, but once you get established, things start to move quick.

As I no longer live in Exmouth, having moved away 40 years ago, I can say however, Exmouth can be a delightful place to live in and as most towns and citys, its has its pro's and con's.

There are many pubs in Exmouth where you can go for a drink and possibly meet new people, its mostly up to the individual how one does that, some people, like myself are typical 'english extroverted' while othere are quite the opposite.

You have the Internet, so thats a great help in which to meet people, even in Exmouth. Here we have the Forums where you can have your say and that too helps kill the time if you feel alone. I am sure you will, in due course, find you made the right move and someone will surely come into your life and become a good friend. Where there'a a will, there's a way and where there's a way, there is the possibility.

Good luck and best wishes,

Rob.

Thank you Rob Smile [:)]

Unfortunately I'm a confident person but not so much that I could walk into a pub alone and strike up conversations with complete strangers. I wish I was, I think its a woman thing though.

Having been here for a year now though Im beginning to wonder how long it actually does take to become established. A year and still no interaction with real people. I love the town and the area and dont regret moving here at all but am now finding its getting lonely. Ive used the internet for many years and I have to say I find its all geared to dating and couples, not simply meeting friends.

I shall keep trying though.

Hello Exmouthlady, I've been in Exmouth for 10 years now and I did find it hard initially, though I had the advantage of a new baby so meeting other mums wasn't a problem. I do know how hard it is as many people have grown up here so have established friendships and family around, therefore I found weren't as desperate as me to socialise! I'm 35, also a single mother, I work 3 or 4 nights a week so I have some spare time during the day when my daughter is at school to go for coffee or a walk if you're up for it?

Hi Exmouth Lady

I am local to East Devon having been born in Sidmouth originally and lived in Honiton for the last 7 years, we moved here about 6 weeks ago.

I will admit I don't have a lot of time, I work full-time and am doing a part-time degree as well, so fun, fun, fun.

I don't have children, however, I do have a dog (mischevious), and I am partial to the odd drink.

I am 33 years old and string a fairly coherent conversation together.  I am quite confident and outgoing and have already made it into a pub on my own, but as I go on and off building sites for a living, I don't really let anything intimidate me.

If you want to meet up, please reply to my post and we'll find some way of meeting up - give me until after the end of bank holiday in May though as that's when I need to get all my coursework in!
