I see the Sidmouth Herald is reporting that the salvage crane RAMBIZ has been dropped onto the deck of the stern section! Hmm the RAMBIZ hasn't arrived yet - we'll know it when she does - she's rather large. So, it is November and thoughts turn to booking a Summer Holiday. Should I risk a precious week and a great deal of money on Seaton in July? Are the beaches going to be usable and the shops open in the evening? If they are shunting stuff about through to March, and there is delay,  will the summer holidays still see oil on the beach? Is there oil now - and I mean would you let your child in the sea if it were warm enough? If delay happens, will the traders give up like last year?  And sitting 250 miles away, reliant on the communications that didn't indicate how much Seaton was impacted last year, do I trust what the council says on its site?    Heated debate in our household on this one. If we don't come, it will be the first time in 12 years.    After last year, frankly, I'm not sure want to come, as even having calmed down, I still feel so let down. Family want to come if they can use the beach. Views from locals appreciated......    Report

She's now beginning to look like a lump of metal - although she probably did already to the Jurassic NIMBYS. At least I assume it was the latter couple.    Report

All the accommodation block has been cut away and the scrap has been removed for disposal. The bow section was towed to a yard in Northern Ireland last year. All the salvage vessels and plant equipment that were on site have now returned to Rotterdam. All that remains is the cut down stern section with a 30 degree list to starboard. The owners representatives and insurers are currently in discussions to decide the timetable and method for removing the final section in phase 2 which is expected to commence sometime in April. The duration of the final phase will not be known until the final method of removal has been determined. Hugh Shaw, the Secretary of States Representative for Maritime Salvage and Intervention said: We have reached a milestone in the removal of the final piece of the wreck of the MSC Napoli. The original plan was for a 2 phase operation to remove the stern section.   Because the stern section is listing after a spell of bad weather, the plan for phase 2 may have to be revised, and this is the subject of further negotiations and discussions at the moment. From now until the start of Phase 2 a legally enforceable total exclusion zone (TEZ) of 500 metres will be in place.    Report

Cut the remains down to just below sea-level and leave the submerged hulk where it is? Would certainly be good for marine life in a couple of years - with minimal impact on the local environment!        Report

The DCC roadshow bus was not exactly overun by those wishing to 'give their evidence' whilst it was parked on Sidmouth Esplanade yesterday. The 40 or 50 so people observed by Cllr Hughes were simply the normal seafront walkers on their morning constitutional - after an hour or so of inactivity, even Cllr Hughes went walkabout - to the bank then bought a pasty. A complete waste of council taxpayers money.        Report

It appears that the plan is now to reduce the size of the hulk even further to allow it to be carried away in smaller pieces. Work is to re-commence in May with further explosions scheduled to cut away the propellor and loosen the engine ready for removal. Some of these explosions may be underwater so we're in for some depth charge look-alikes when they set them off. The word on the street is that they are having serious technical problems with the 'nibbler' when it comes to operating the cutter underwater. Not much headway has been made for the past 3 weeks. A new milestone has been reached in the salvage operation of MSC Napoli - nothing of the vessel is now visible above the surface of the water. The fretting councillors and Jurasic NIMBYS can relax - nothing is now spoiling the view of the collapsing cliffs. However, the rumour mill suggests that a new plan (another one) will soon be brought into operation whereby attempts at 'nibbling' at the remains will now be replaced by 'chain cutting' what is left and removing it in large 'lumps of metal' onto barges. Salvage work suspended until next spring then - although the scrap barge is currently still out there with tugs in attendance. Perhaps we'll see most of the salvage fleet drift off over the next few days and leave a tug to loiter and keep an eye on the remains over the winter. Well - what if the remains 'silt up' over the winter? Will what is left be left? A nice little one up one down for the fishes to make their home in?      Report
