We were promised that the Ottery St.Mary warden would also cover Sidmouth (stretching both a point and resources!). In my opinion there has been no evidence of this over the past few weeks - disabled badge drivers park where they like - causing obstructions left, right and centre! The High Street is complete chaos on most days and the MSC Naploli watchers who peer over the warmth of the dashboard are regulary clogging up Port Royal.  Moulder.          Report

We won't get any traffic warden cover here now until the County Council pulls their finger out next March with civil parking enforcement. People winge about Tesco deliveries in the paper - they should come further into town and see double parked coaches outside of the The Royal York and Faulkner blocking Fore Street and The Esplanade - delivery vans parking on the zebra crossing zig zag lines while delivering to the Mocha and the lazy visitors blocking the lifeboat access to the beach at Clifton end!      Report

Credit is due to the foresight of those that tasked the Ottery Traffic Warden at Port Royal end of Sidmouth Esplanade during the re-beaching of the MSC Napoli. It stopped the literally scores of rubber necking motorists, too tight to pay for a car park, from clogging up the Ham horseshoe.        Report

Get yourselves down to Sidmouth seafront every morning during Folk Week - the traders in their white vans are parking on the zig-zag lines of the Zebra Crossing! I nearly got clobbered by a car that couldn't see me because they were obscuring the driver's view.      Report

Situation normal - saw a police car drive right past one parked on the zig-zags this morning - didn't bat an eyelid! It appears to take major surgery to separate ol' bill from their car seats nowadays!!        Report

I didn't realise how much the Sidmouth Herald impacts on the police duty roster for Sidmouth. We get a letter in the paper about the lack of traffic wardens (see link) and blow me if the local PCSO isn't handing out tickets at the Fore Street "loading bay" that very morning. I would highlight that of course the Sidmouth Herald is a media for informing the police of the needs of the residents of Sidmouth, and it is to their credit that the police are listening and responding appropriately! Did you know that PCSO's have only recently been given the power to issue parking tickets? Regarding loading and unloading on the seafront to hotels and local businesses, surely the police have to take a measured approach and balance the needs of the public with the needs of local businesses etc?  Sidmouth is a tourist town and relies on it's tourist trade. Without this measured approach the town would suffer. Personally I think it is great to have PCSO's on the beat with the powers to issue tickets.  There are more of them and they are better able to deal with all sorts of problems, not just traffic! I also get cross when people put the Police in general down.  It's not like its your local bobby's fault if they are short staffed.  Those decisions are made by headquarters. Did you also not think that when the police car drove passed the parking offence you mentioned, that maybe they were on their way to a fatality, concern for a lost child or something more pressing than a car parked momentarily in the wrong spot? I think we need to find a balance here don't you?    Report

Moulder instead of moaning about the parking and traffic issues in this beautiful town why dont you do something constructive and take the licence plates of the offending vehicles along with the times and dates of the offence and either phone the police or go to the station.     Report

I think we need to find a balance here don't you?   Actually I didn't know that the local constabulary are depending on a weekly newspaper to keep them abreast of the needs of residents - perhaps this is what is known as 'Intelligence led policing'. Yes - I am aware that  PCSOs have been given similar powers to that of traffic wardens - this I assume is to fill a hole left by the running down of the TW grade prior to the police giving up their responsibility for civil parking enforcement next March - and is why we haven't had a permanent traffic warden in Sidmouth for nearly a year. Regarding the delivery lorries - what the police need to do is to enforce the traffic and parking regulations - this is what they are paid for - what we pay for! Perhaps arrangements could be made for deliveries to take place a little earlier, say 8am - they could then be away and out of town before the tourist traffic arrives. Have another careful read at posts number 8 & 9 - then perhaps you'll realise that the police have not been continuously "put down". There was no evidence whatsover to suggest that the police car was on "a shout" when they cruised past the illegally parked vehicle. We do not have any effective parking enforcement in Sidmouth and the town is getting choked because of this. You are correct that a sense of balance is required - its gone too far the way of the ignorant motorist thus far! Wouldn't you agree?          Report
