Handicap should rule Dowell Street site out of race for community centre.
The Honiton Community Centre meeting - Herald, April 4- was a mixture of enthusiasts urging the project on and those apprehensive over the costs.
The Dowell Street site, having been the town’s rubbish dump, is a very expensive site upon which to build as special, expensive - £40k to £140k - foundations are required.
This nugatory expenditure has to be raised by fund-raising, which is difficult enough as it is without this additional financial handicap .
The solution to the problem is to go back to the original Lace Walk site. This has four advantages. No expensive foundations, extra parking revenue for the district council, cost savings for both the community centre and the Tourist Information Centre and retention of the coach park upon which the prosperity of the High Street and museum rely.
An all round win-win situation for everyone .
