COLYFORD Goose Fayre was a great success this year, despite a lack of large animals due to the foot and mouth movement restrictions.
More than 2,000 people followed the traditional costumed procession to the Springfield.
Martyn Goddard and Georgie Bell changed their wedding arrangements to fit in with the fayre. The couple brought forward their marriage, at Colyford, by an hour - so their party did not get in the way of the procession.
This year the fayre celebrated 800 years since King John granted the charter.
As a result, there was a re-enactment of the bringing of the news, which followed on from the traditional Mummers Play.
Alan Davis, a spokesman for the fayre, said: “There were cries of ‘make way for the King’s messenger’ as Samantha Swithinbank rode in to present a scroll to Mayor Eric Platts.”
The town crier read out the charter that granted the permission, which was originally signed on September 1, 1207.
Mr Davis said: “It was a very good day and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, which is the main aim of the event, as well as raising money for the community.
“We had a good crowd but we are still working out how much was made.
“We normally have a couple of Devon Red cattle, some sheep and pigs, and it would have been nice to have them but with everything that was going on, they didn’t seem to be missed too much.”
“The committee is very grateful to Mr and Mrs Pountney and Mr Organ, for permission to use the fields, which provide such a good setting for the event.”
