Community organisation Word Kitchen has secured a grant for a project to promote writing, creativity and performance in East Devon.

The grant was provided by the Creative East Devon Fund as part of the wider East Devon Cultural Strategy.

The project was organised in association with Dunkeswell Youth Club.

Sidmouth-based David Lloyd and co-curator Pippa Marriott are the brains behind Word Kitchen.

They are confident that this project will connect communities through literary and performance events.

The main focus is on fostering writing talents and encouraging locals to share their spoken word prose and poetry.

Dunkeswell Youth Club will host a series of Word Kitchen creative writing workshops throughout January.

The aim is to encourage young people to create stories, experiment with unique ideas, and share their written work.

Towards the end of the workshop, they will have the opportunity to perform their works in a celebration of their accomplishments.

Pippa Marriott said: "We chose the name Word Kitchen because it suggests a delicious creative process that uses all sorts of ingredients to cook up tasty things to share!

"With Word Kitchen we're developing recipes for diverse people to come together in our workshops and creatively cook up stories, poems and words to potentially perform in front of a supportive group or audience."

David Lloyd added: "We approached Anne Barratt, committee member of Dunkeswell Youth Club to see if we could work together to run events that would benefit young people in the local community.

"Dunkeswell has a thriving youth club and we wanted to offer young people the chance to see how making and sharing stories can be fun and fulfilling."

Anne Barratt said: "We are delighted to be working with Word Kitchen.

"As a youth club we wanted to extend our menu of arts activity and these workshops will be a great addition to our programme.

"We hope our members will enjoy discovering new stories."

After the culmination of the workshops, open mics and writing workshops will be held on February 21 and March 6 at Brook Kitchen in Budleigh Salterton.
