Engineers are on track to build a first “green” locomotive for the Beer Heights Light Railway.

Chief mechanical engineer John Macdougall is working on modifying one of the powerful automatic mini MK1 engines to run on propane gas.

Currently the locomotive is undergoing running trials in its skeleton form, pulling the last train of the day.

In a few weeks the external metalwork will be fabricated and added to the body.

“Hopefully the locomotive will be complete before the end of the summer season, with a naming ceremony expected sometime next year,” said Mr Macdougall.

“For railway and motor car enthusiasts who are looking to see something a little different, and they can come along and have a look at this new machine themselves.”
