The man, in his 60s, was involved in an incident in Bridgwater at around 11am. Residents said they believed he was from the Honiton area.
Police have moved to dismiss rumours of a shooting.
Avon and Somerset Police, via their @ASPolice Twitter page, said: “There has NOT been a shooting in Bridgwater.
“A man has died after an altercation this morning, a man has been arrested in connection.”
