Honiton pratice nurse tackles Mount Toubkal trek in Morocco.
A Honiton practice nurse has completed a ‘tough trek’ to raise much-needed funds for Parkinson’s UK.
Anne Hitchens, who works at Honiton Surgery, joined a team of trekkers to tackle Mount Toubkall in Morocco earlier this month.
Mount Toubkal is the higest of the Atlas Mountains.
“The trekking was hard as the terrain is so tough but we helped each other along. There was lots of slippery shale making it difficult to keep upright on the steep climb, not helped by the altitude that makes every step tiring,” says Anne.
“We also had to carry about four litres of water which is heavy, in excess of our rucksacks and gear. However, the local guides were helpful and showed us the best techniques for trekking in such an environment.
“I was delighted that when I reached the summit, the sun was shining, not a cloud in the sky and I could see far across the Sahara desert. I took time to really take it in so that I may remember it for years to come.
“The whole experience was amazing. Morocco is a fascinating country and after the trek was completed I had a little time to enjoy Marrakech. The people are friendly and it was a great end to a hard week.”
The charity is close to Anne’s heart as her father suffers with the disease.
Anne added: “I have personal connections with Parkinson’s and also see people with the condition at the surgery where I work. These challenges for Parkinson’s UK are difficult but they remind me that many people are facing difficult challenges everyday. The money I raise for Parkinson’s UK will go towards research in to Parkinson’s to help find a prevention or cure for the condition. Great strides are being made but it can only continue if the funding is available.
“I am most grateful to all the people who have sponsored me on for this challenge. I pay for my own trip fees and accommodations so any money they donate will go to Parkinson’s UK and obviously I hope to raise as much as possible.”
This is latest challenge Anne has completed to raise money for Parkinson’s UK. She has previously walked across the Great Wall of China, completed a trek in Spain and cycled the terrain in Cuba.
