Favourite seaside viewing point in Seaton gets a new roof thanks to Master Thatcher

Repairs to Seaton’s Castle Hill shelter have been completed following the arson attack which destroyed much of the building earlier this year.

The much- loved wooden building has been given a new roof by Master Thatcher Philip White, from Kilmington, and his team of Luke Jones and Ben Scofield.

They used Turkish water reed for the job with the ridge being made from straw, grown in Ilminster.

Mr White said the work – costing around £5,500 - had gone well and was completed in two weeks.

But he said it was amazing they got it done so quickly because so many people enquired about their progress.

“It was amazing - people stopped all the time to talk about it. It is definitely a very popular building,” he said.

The East Devon District Council owned shelter was destroyed by fire during spate of arson attacks in the town during March.

Angry residents hung a sign from the sealed off area simply asking the culprits “Why?”

Other blazes had been started deliberately at the Underfleet car park, the skate park and a bird hide on Colyford Common prompting police to warn that someone could be killed if the attacks continued.

Police say that despite their investigations no one has yet been charged in connection with the shelter fire.
