Honiton man recognised as an outstanding citizen.

A Honiton man has been recognised for his bravery after helping to prevent a burglary and bringing two offenders to justice.

Liam Goodwin was presented with an award by the High Sheriff Robin Barlow at a ceremony held at County Hall, Exeter, last week.

The award recognises him as an outstanding citizen of Devon.

The 23-year-old called the police after seeing two men trying to break into a property last year when he was walking home.

When he challenged them, he was attacked and hit over the head with a bottle as he called the police.

He also tried to catch a photo of the two men while he waited for officers to arrive at the scene.

Liam was threatened with a knife during the incident but his actions led to the offenders being given six-month prison sentences, suspended for two years.

On receiving his award, Liam said: “I am very pleased. It was pleasant surprise.”

He added: “There are a lot of people out there who do a lot of different things in the community - the only thing I have done, I would hope anyone would do.”

High Sheriff Robin Barlow said: “These people are a remarkable group of individuals, each of whom in their own quiet way has been doing something very special.

They are a credit to their community and county.”
