A Honiton woman has been shortlisted to received a Local Hero award in recognition of her tireless efforts to promote recycling and freecycling.

Karen Berger is the mastermind behind the Waste Not Want Not events, staged in the Mackarness Hall, which encourage people to let others have their unwanted goods for free.

The events are this month being incorporated into Sustainable Saturdays – a monthly initiative that is being rolled out by Transition Town Honiton.

Karen has been nominated to receive an accolade in the Recycle Devon Thank You Awards.

She will be attending an awards ceremony at County Hall, Exeter, on January 31 when the overall winners in each category will be announced.

“I have to say, this is a very pleasant surprise,” she told the Midweek Herald. “But I couldn’t have done it without the lovely volunteers.”
