A sixth form student at Axe Valley Community College has beaten off stiff competition to win the chance of an educational trip to America.

Matt Mortimer is one of 175 students, from an original pool of more than 3,700, shortlisted for the Sutton Trust USA Programme.

The teenager highly impressed judges with his suitability and commitment to the programme.

Matt had to produce a four-minute video to prove his appropriateness for the course.

After a London-based residential – including attendance at London School of Economics – 150 students will continue within the programme. If Matt is successful, he will continue on the US programme and attend the US week this summer, based at Yale University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Sutton Trust is a highly prestigious organisation representing the very top UK universities, such as Cambridge, Warwick, Durham, Exeter and Bristol.

Head of sixth form at Axe Valley, Rupert Carr, said: “Matt has done exceptionally well so far and we wish him every success.”

Matt said: “This programme gives me the opportunity to experience life and education in the USA which I may not have been able to do. I will be able to look around a top university, MIT or Yale and soak up what it is like to live and study in the USA, as I think it is very different than the UK.

“I am very happy to get to this stage in the selection process.”
