Rotary club honours college headteacher and local councillor for their efforts

A college head and a town councillor have been named winners of this year’s Axminster Rotary Club community awards.

The Les Knight Youth Award went to Martin Smith, headteacher of the Axe Valley Community College.

It was presented to him at the club’s weekly business meeting by acting president Simon Dunn, accompanied by Mr Knight’s widow, Iris.

Mr Dunn told a full house of Rotarians and visitors that Mr Smith had developed the college in both high educational standards and the development of extra-curricular activities. His encouragement to outside organisations had brought expertise and experience to the benefit of students to prepare them better for the challenges of work and adulthood generally.

Meanwhile The Bill Knapman Community Award went to Cllr John Jeffery, well known for his outstanding work for the community over many years.

Mr Dunn said he had worked tirelessly for the Axminster community, was willing to step in and help wherever he could and without being asked, and mostly without recognition.

Cheques for £100 were also given to both recipients by the Rotary Club, to be donated to a charity of their choice.
