An Axminster schoolgirl‘s picture of The Queen will be presented to the monarch as a personal gift to celebrate her diamond jubilee.

Amy Durrant, 10, from St Andrew’s Drive, won her age category in the National Portrait of the Queen competition.

The contest was open to all UK schoolchildren to help create a pictorial legacy of the Queen’s reign.

Amy’s painting was entered by her art teacher at St Michael’s Primary School in Lyme Regis where she is a pupil.

Amy said: “I’m very happy and I’m very proud of myself because I didn’t think I could win it.

“I looked on the website and because I coloured it in quite well it stands out and the way I did the face was quite good.”

Amy recently travelled to London to receive her prizes from the Mayor of Richmond, Rita Palmer, at a champagne celebration.

The youngster’s portrait was displayed along with the other entries at Philip Mould and Co art gallery in Mayfair alongside royal portraits worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Amy said: “It was quite exciting g. I have only been to London once before that I can remember with my grandma.”

Amy’s parents Kelly, a business support administrator, and Michael, who is serving in the army, travelled with her to the reception along with her sister Tori, 12.

Mum Kelly said: “The whole family is really proud of her.

“It’s a massive achievement and her art teacher Sue Hammond is to thank for it because she entered her picture into the competition

“She has always enjoyed art and craft things and is very musical so she has always had a lot of creative interests.

“Her painting was in between portraits worth hundreds of thousands of pounds so it was a bit surreal seeing that.

“It was a good day out and Amy absolutely loved it.”

As well as her certificate Amy received a goodie bag packed with souvenirs form the London portrait gallery and a book “How the Queen can make you happy” by Mary Killen, who was also at the reception to sign copies.

The main prize for the winners is to have a portrait of themselves painted by an acclaimed artist from photos taken at the reception.

These portraits will be given to them in April when they return to London for the next stage of their prize.

Judges for the contest included current “I’m a Celebrity” contestant and “Made in Chelsea” star Hugo Taylor, Surveyor of the Queen’s pictures Desmond Shawe-Taylor and acclaimed artists Nicky Philipps, Jenny Caron Hall and Francis Hamel.
