Town turns out in force for a memorial service to mark the centenary of the start of the conflict in August 1914

Axminster turned out in force on Sunday to honour the victims of The First World War.

The Parish Church was packed for a memorial service marking the centenary of the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914.

The Rev Geoffrey Walsh officiated and a greeting was given by the Rector, Rev John Streeting.

Afterwards the congregation, together with representatives of the armed forces, local uniformed groups and the Royal British Legion, gathered on the Minster Green where local children laid red roses in memory of the 65 from Axminster who lost their lives in the conflict.

Amongst those attending the ceremony were Mayor Jeremy Walden, county councillor Andrew Moulding, Deputy Lieutenant of Devon Nicholas Maxwell-Lawford, MP Neil Parish and representatives of neighbouring councils.

RBL member Mervyn Symes, who organised the event with Jacquie Thomas, said: “We were delighted with the turnout. Yet again it brought the community gathered in Axminster.”
