Town to mark the 800th anniversary of King John’s decision to allow it to hold an annual fair

Plans to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the granting of Axminster’s Royal Chater are being backed by the town council.

A suggestion to mark the milestone in 2015 has come from Lord of the Manor and market rights holder Jim Rowe.

He has written to the town council to point out that in 1215 the burgesses of Axminster were awarded a charter by King John to stage an eight day fair beginning on the feast of St John the Baptist.

He says the special anniversary, in two years’ time, is cause for celebrations in the town.

“The original first charter was granted to Axminster in 1204 ands regretfully that slipped by,” he told members.

“Would Axminster council be interested in celebrating this event in 2015, along with the church, as this is what has happened in previous years?”

Councillor Sue Spiller said it was soemthing the town council should support as it was part of the town’s heritage.

“So long as it doesn’t cost us any money,” added Cllr Graham Godbeer.

Mr Rowe said they would now go ahead and draw up plans to mark the anniversary.
