Mayor’s “mixed feelings” over rescue package as 300 lose their jobs on town’s blackest day

THE deputy leader of East Devon District Council has reacted with sadness at the news of some 300 job losses at Axminster Carpets and has pledged the authority’s support for the workforce.

Councillor Andrew Moulding, who is also mayor of Axminster, said he had mixed feelings about the rescue package that is being put together.

He said: “I am obviously pleased that the Axminster Carpets brand will be kept alive and that the company is to continue trading in the town.

“But there is a bitter-sweet taste to this news, because of the unhappy revelation that a significant number of jobs will be lost – and that will have an impact on individuals and families.”

An EDDC spokesman said its revenues and benefits team is working closely with the JobCentre Plus, Axminster Job Club and the Citizens’ Advice Bureau to ensure that people get all the help they need.

They will visit the Axminster Carpets factory on Thursday, March 7, between 2pm and 4.30 p.m. to meet with affected employees who may want advice.

Councillor Moulding added: “We want to ensure people have access to all the professional advice and guidance that could save them money and help them get back into work at this difficult time.”
