Firm ‘continues to trade’ as administrators sell off part of the company’s Buckfastleigh holdings, saving 20 jobs

Axminster Carpets was continuing to trade as The Herald went to press today (Tueday) – despite part of its Buckfastleigh spinning and dyeing arm going into administration on Monday.

Devonia – a commercial tannery processing British sheepskins - was immediately sold to Eastern Counties Leather, safeguarding 20 jobs.

A spokesman for administrators Duff and Phelps said: “Axminster Carpets Limited, the (Devonia) company’s ultimate holding company, does not form part of this sale and is not currently in administration.

“Axminster Carpets continues to trade and fulfil its customers’ orders while all available options are being pursued by the company’s board of directors.”

Axminster Carpets’ managing director, Josh Dutfield, welcomed the Devonia sale.

He said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Devonia staff for their loyalty and hard work. I am delighted that the business’ future and the employees’ jobs have been secured and I wish them all the best for the future. Devonia is a great British brand with a great heritage in the local area.”

Meanwhile senior Community Union officials were hoping to meet Axminster Carpet bosses yesterday for further talks.

A spokesman said: “We are aiming to get some insight from them to see how they see things played out over the next couple of weeks and what action they are planning to take. We need to know what they are doing.

“We want the facts on the table to find out the nature of the problems and what they are doing to keep the employees up to speed with information – and any assistance the union can bring to that.

More than 2,000 people signed the union petition in the first 48 hours after its launch.

It reads: “We the undersigned support the campaign to save Axminster Carpets and keep this historic firm and carpet manufacturing in Axminster. We call on the Government to do more to support the carpet industry in this country.”
