There is an opportunity to burn off the Christmas calories with a bracing dip in the briny at Lyme Regis on New Year’s Day.

Once again the town’s Rotary Club is staging the Lyme Lunge on Wednesday, January 1.

In 2013 the event raised over £2,800 and members are hoping to make an even bigger splash for cash this time.

John and Marlyn McHugh started the Lyme Lunge in 2007 to raise funds in memory of their grandson who died following a brain tumour and the Rotary Club of Lyme Regis took it over in 2009.

The sums raised for charity have steadily grown over the years as popularity increases and organisers say they intend to push hard to continue that trend.

Said a spokesman for the club: “We have chosen CLIC SARGENT as the charity that we shall support in 2014.

“The Lyme lunge has become an established event in Lyme Regis, attracting thousands of people to the town to watch and participate in the fun on New Year’s Day.”

Fancy dress swimmers are asked to gather on the sandy beach at the Cobb at 1pm promptly for the swim.
