Cash boost for Seaton end of life nursing team

More than £1,200 raised at The Grizzly for Seaton Friends Hospiscare@Home service

Seaton Friends Hospiscare@Home has been given a £1,206 boost following the town’s Grizzly running race.

Competitors Dr Mark Welland and Dr Joe Kent raised £606.70 in sponsorship while Axe Valley Runners donated a further £600 which included support from Axminster Tools.

Dr Welland, League chairman said: “Running the Grizzly back in March now seems a world and several seasons away. The return of the Eastly Beastly Blizzard conditions made for a Grizzly like no other. Instead of the usual fare of bogs and beaches, this year was all snow, ice, and wind.

“My hat is off to all those that supported the race, especially the marshals staked out in Arctic conditions, and to the Axe Valley Runners team that organised the event with an admirable balance of courage and safety.

“Running over Beer Head with six inches of snow underfoot, drifting deeply at the styles, with the wind blasting icy flakes at my face, and very limited visibility, was all a unique experience. The exhausting climb up the stairway to heaven from Branscombe Beach was cut out, and replaced by a challenging descent back to the Anchor in Beer with a treacherous icy road underfoot.

“I have to admit it felt like we got off lightly seeing the finish line with less than 10 miles travelled - that is not a complaint! “The chilly conditions were throughout the weekend matched by the warmth of spirit of the competitors, organisers, and supporters. Enormous thanks to everyone who sponsored me and Dr Joe Kent, and thereby helped to support the Seaton Friends Hospiscare at Home nursing team.”

League of Friends manager Lycia Moore said: “We would like to thank everyone who sponsored our local GPs, also Axe Valley Runners and Axminster Tools. The continued support the League is receiving for our Seaton Friends Hospiscare@Home service is very much appreciated and is enabling the service to continue. The Service does not receive any NHS funding, but is completely funded by the League of Friends.”
