Staff raise over £1,000 for hospital league of friends.
Staff at the Co-op in Lace Walk have made a healthy donation to Honiton Hospital League of Friends.
They collected £1,083 through the sale of secondhand books.
The League’s chairman, Heather Penwarden, last week thanked staff for their generosity, saying the cash would be “extremely helpful”.
She battled through a snow storm to visit the store on Wednesday and told the Midweek Herald: “It will be an enormous help; it is extremely welcome.
“In the past, we have been able to purchase numerous items, including comfortable chairs, radios for the day rooms, blood pressure monitors, equipment for the maternity unit and, last month, were able to buy every patient who was in hospital on Christmas Day a present.
“We also made the hospital look more festive.”
Heather added: “I know, in these difficult times, it is not easy to raise money.
“The Co-op has been extraordinarily kind in what they have done for us over the past 12 months.”
The League’s former long-serving chairman, Vic Bowsher MBE, who is still a committee member, set up the one-year link with the Co-op.
He had hoped to thank staff personally, but was snowed in at Luppitt.
Receiving the thanks on behalf of the Co-op was Kath Baker, who is already busy fund-raising for the store’s 2013 chosen charity. Watch this space.
