Colyton's mock trial team at the Magistrates’ Court

But the verdict just goes against the grammar school’s mock trial team

The verdict just went against students from Colyton Grammar School when they appeared in court last week.

A team of legal eagles were competing in the regional heats of the Magistrates’ Court Mock Trial Competition in Newton Abbot.

The Year 9 students came up against Braunton College and Plymouth High School for Girls who pipped Colyton by one point to win.

Despite this, the team represented the school well and the High Sheriff of Devon, John Lee, was particularly impressed with Eden Smith’s speech for the prosecution.

The team took up roles of lawyers, witnesses, magistrates and court staff and worked on a case regarding handling a stolen road bike.

History teacher, Justine Solomon, who coaches the team said: “It was a close call, but they all did very well and should be proud of their performance.”

The Magistrates’ Court Mock Trial Competition, which has been running annually since 1994, introduces the legal system to young people in an innovative and exciting way.
