A dementia champion has her sights set on turning Honiton into a dementia friendly town.

Heather Penwarden, who has volunteered to be a Dementia Friends champion, is looking to local community groups, businesses and other organisations in the town - to help make her plans a reality by getting involved.

She said: “I signed up to be a Dementia Friends champion because I am really keen that Honiton works towards becoming a Dementia Friendly Town.”

Throughout June she will be talking to Honiton Town Council and Honiton District Chamber of Commerce to form a Honiton Dementia Action Alliance, which is the first step in working towards becoming a Dementia Friendly Town.

The action alliance will be made up of ‘key groups’ within the community and will work together to make the town a safe, friendly and supportive place for people living with dementia.

Heather, who is also the chairman of Honiton Memory Café, will be delivering Dementia Friends information sessions to people across Honiton over the coming months.

She added: “Less than half of us think we know enough about dementia. Dementia Friends isn’t about creating experts, it’s about helping people understand a little bit more about what it’s like to live with the condition and then turn that understanding into action - anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend.”

Heather will be holding a Dementia Friends information session on Tuesday, June 3, starting at 6pm. The one hour session at Honiton Library is part of the Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friends programme – an initiative aiming to help members of the public understand what it might be like to live with dementia. The charity hopes to have one million Dementia Friends by 2015.

To reserve a place at this free session, contact Honiton Library on 01404 42818 or Heather Penwarden on 01404 45360 or Penwarden@btinternet.com
