Annual shouting match will take place in the town square

OYEZ! They’re planning a shouting match in Seaton at the weekend.

The ‘ding-dong’ Battle of the Town Criers will take place in the town square on Saturday (August 30).

Hosted by Seaton’s own champion town crier David Craner and mayor Cllr Gaynor Sedgwick, the competition will start at 10.45am with a parade of criers from across the country.

All members of the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers (AHGTC), they will be dressed according to 18th century tradition including a “coloured robe, a tricorn hat, black boots and breeches” and carry and handbell to attract attention.

In times gone by they were the chief means of getting news out to the people in towns, especially as many could not read or write.

At 11am the competition kicks off with criers from 13 other towns competing against each other in Seaton Square . They will ‘cry’ again at 2pm.

This year’s competition will see some well-known criers who have won many contests appearing. The Town Criers will each prepare two cries - the first being their ‘home’ cry - promoting the highlights of their home town to the people of Seaton, and a second ‘themed’ cry which can include anything from a place of interest to Kylie Minogue appearing on stage locally.

“All the cries must start with the traditional ‘Oyez Oyez Oyez’ and end with ‘God Save the Queen!’”

The contest is sponsored this year by Bevis and Beckinsale, The Shed, Amore, Frydays and Seaton Town Development Team. Everyone is invited to go along and watch the town criers and their escorts in their colorful regalia battle it out to win the crown.
