Police investigate 31 offences in May - the highest monthly figure since 2009

A big increase in crime was recorded at Seaton in May.

Thefts, assaults and criminal damage were amongst 31 incidents investigated by police – against 19 in April and just 13 in the same month last year.

Local beat manager PC Steve Speariett said May’s was the highest figure since 2009 when 40 crimes were recorded. But it was still well below the peak of 60 crimes in 2004.

There were eight reported assaults and in six of these suspects have either been identified or charged.

The increased number of thefts had included three cases of solar lights being taken from gardens.

PC Speariett said “Whilst it is very difficult to prevent this type of theft we are asking homeowners to mark the lights in some way either using a permanent marker, UV pen or nail varnish. This will make it easier to identify stolen property. Also if anyone has suddenly noticed a garden looking like it is competing to beat the Blackpool illuminations please call us!”

In a special appeal to World Cup watchers he added: “The local neighbourhood teams will be out on patrol especially during the England games. We ask that those wishing to take part in social events drink responsibly and they ensure it is an enjoyable experience for all - we just hope that England play their part as well!”
