Staff and patients at the Hospiscare Day Care Centre in Seaton Hospital meet on a Tuesday and Thursday for friendship, support and activities.

Many are looking forward to the opening of the new East Devon Day Hospice in Honiton and the facilities it will offer for the people of East Devon.

Seaton Day Care is managed by Mandy Dowell who has worked in the day centre since it opened seven years ago; she is described by patients and their families as a ‘hero’ who is kind and caring.

David, 66, who lives in Honiton, said that the Hospiscare staff in Seaton ‘cannot be faulted, they are so caring and understanding about your problems and are always there to help you’.

David had to give up his job as a community driver and moved to Honiton to be closer to his family after being diagnosed with myeloma, a form of cancer. The day centre has allowed him to meet new people whose friendships support one another.

David said: “There are so many things being cut back and things closing but Hospiscare approached me and told me about day care, so I am very lucky.”

The new day hospice which will serve all of East Devon will be located in Honiton. The hospice will offer more space for activities including complementary therapies and its own garden which patients will be able to enjoy throughout the year.

Joan Gray, who has worked at Seaton Day Care for four years, plans to relocate to the new hospice in Honiton when Seaton’s day care service is transferred to the new East Devon Day Hospice.

She said: “Day care is very light hearted and we have a good laugh. I like seeing people making friends, it’s like a support group but it’s not doom and gloom it’s just helping one another.”

If you would like to support the East Devon Day Hospice Appeal please contact appeal fundraiser Sarah Smith on 01392 688095 or visit www.eastdevondayhospiceappeal.co.uk.

The Midweek Herald, Exmouth Journal, and Sidmouth Herald have teamed up with Hospiscare to support the charity’s East Devon Day Hospice Appeal. The charity has already raised more than £40,000 towards the £250,000 needed to complete and run the state-of-the-art day hospice.
