Find out the latest on the East Devon Day Hospice Appeal.

Hospiscare needs to raise £5million each year to provide high-quality care and support to patients and their families across Exeter, Mid and East Devon. A massive 70 per cent of this funding comes from fundraising.

Hospiscare is fortunate to have 12 dedicated groups of volunteers who organise events and collections each year, providing vital support for the charity.

East Devon alone has four groups, who brave all weathers to hold collection tins, and give up their free time to organise and run events, contributing hugely to the £250k raised last year alone by Hospiscare’s support groups.

With the new East Devon Day Hospice due to open later this year, Honiton Support Group chairman Mary Bolshaw said the groups are doing more than ever to help raise the £250k needed to complete and run the facility

Mary said: “We must be aware that our hospice needs to keep running and the East Devon appeal is extra. We’ve already done more to raise money for the appeal, with more in the pipeline.”

Mary and husband Trevor, along with Jan Sutcliffe’s theatre company Nostalgia Incorporated, raised more than £1,000 for the East Devon Day Hospice Appeal last November after organising a supper and song concert. The Honiton Support Group’s ability to draw on its committee members’ individual skills has been one of the reasons for the group’s success over the years.

Mary said: “Fundraising events are personal to the group; my husband is a musician so we put on the tea concert. We’re a rare combination but we work to our skills.

“The committee and volunteers present ideas to raise money and they are supported. We also have individuals who fundraise; we just support people who support us, in whatever way we can.”

Mary was introduced to Hospiscare more than 30 years ago by Hospiscare’s first fundraiser Rosemarie Burrows, and has undertaken a whole host of tasks in aid of the charity ever since.

Mary said: “One word describes my role – hectic. With the help of my wonderful committee, I organise refreshments at events and, amongst other things, I’m a volunteer driver and I make marmalade. I spend a lot of time each week but I choose to so it’s fine.

“Our bingo events and bargain sales raise a lot of money for Hospiscare and are only possible through the joint effort of our committee and dedicated volunteers. We run a happy ship; we have a good time and that’s what people who join us always say.”
