Drink drive charge after overnight car crash

A man has been charged with drink driving after a car crash in Exmouth in the early hours of this morning.

The incident was discovered at 1.04am by a passing ambulance service vehicle, whose crew saw the white Peugeot 206 van on its side at the end of St Johns Road, near the B3179.

They alerted an ambulance, and police and fire crews also attended. The fire crews made the vehicle safe, and the road was closed while the vehicle was recovered, and debris and oil was cleared from the carriageway, which reopened fully at 3am.

A spokesman for South West Ambulance Service said that one of the car’s occupants had been taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, and a police spokesman confirmed that 18-year-old Harry Hampton, of Moretonhampstead, had been charged with driving with excess alcohol.

He will appear at Exeter Magistrates Court on November 27.
