One of the pleasures many enjoy, living in a rural county, is the garden.

Whether a patio town garden or sweeping lawns in the country, each can be enjoyed equally.

Forward planning is essential for a garden to fulfil its potential, often years ahead in the planning stage. Famous designers of parklands travelled the world for new tree varieties, never to see the fulfilment of their vision, leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come.

On a modest, domestic level and with the aid of nurseries and garden centres, we can fulfil the vision in a matter of a very few years - even months. Even so, nature constantly evolves and aid is needed to nurture the dream.

Gardens are the setting of a property. When selling, it is wise to ensure the first impression is recorded well – simple, uncluttered clean lines and tidy. The emphasis is often on low maintenance and simplicity – the preference to spend time socialising outdoors rather than actually tending to weeds!

Of course, large gardens with acres of lawn give the chance to play with big boy’s toys – ride-on lawn mowers, garden tractors.

Maintenance in the autumn will show its rewards the following year - collecting leaves for the compost can be therapeutic and maybe chopping logs in readiness for the dark evenings ahead - a job to warm you twice!

Greenslade Taylor Hunt (01404 46222) is selling Bramley, in Buckerell, three miles from Honiton. A three-bedroom detached village bungalow where the gardens are a delight. Extending to 0.3 acres, the living accommodation seamlessly embraces the gardens - a joy to see.

The Manor House, in Colyford, is a stunning example of a 16th century Grade II listed house, forming the major part of a large house. Newly re-thatched and restored, retaining the intrinsic character, blending modern amenities with period features, the house sits in flint stone walled gardens with lawns, herbaceous borders, orchard and vegetable gardens. Ready now for new residents to enjoy. Contact Strutt and Parker (01392 215631).

Sitting above Exmouth, with views across the town to the sea, Sowden Brake is offered by W2 Estates (01395 271800). For sale for the first time in 30 years, the vendors’ green fingers are evident in the prolific, plantsman garden. Standing in three acres with paddock and stabling, this four-bedroom house is ready for a new family to enjoy.

There is nothing more rewarding than the therapeutic quality of tending a garden, enjoying the fruits of your labour, and just sitting back in your own space - ‘it’s all about coming home’.
