East Devon Day Hospice Appeal: How it will benefit patients

With support for the East Devon Day Hospice Appeal strengthening, many people have asked how a day hospice can benefit patients living with life-limiting illnesses.

Hospiscare currently runs day hospices in Exeter, Seaton and Tiverton, delivering its high-quality, free of charge care to people with a terminal diagnosis.

The new day hospice, which will be based at King Street, Honiton, will follow the local charity’s current day care model offering support and advice to patients and their families.

Day hospices are a place for patients to go for support, and offer a warm welcome, the chance to mix with others in a like-situation, as well as a freshly cooked meal and an assisted bath in a relaxing jacuzzi.

As well as meeting both the practical and emotional needs of patients, support at a day hospice can also give patients the tools to be able to make their lives at home easier, building confidence and empowering patients who had perhaps felt that just walking to their own front door was not an option for them anymore.

When Captain David Walker collapsed in April 2013 he lost the use of his legs. David has prostate cancer which had spread to the base of his spine and affected his ability to walk.

The 85-year-old spent the next couple of months in hospital and once allowed back to his flat in Budleigh Salterton, found he couldn’t get out and about without assistance. David said: “And then Hospiscare got in touch and I never looked back.”

David, who was in the merchant service for almost half a century, now visits the Exeter Day Care Centre every Friday and says it’s thanks to the ambulance service that collects him each week that he even manages to get out of the house.

He said: “I’ve got a stair lift but I can’t manage without an ambulance. So they help me onto the lift and get me into the wheelchair.”

But while David says he doesn’t have the courage to use a walking frame whilst on his own, with the help of Hospiscare he is now managing to become more mobile.

David added: “They let me try walking down the footpath from my flat to the ambulance, and recently I’ve done it.

“I’m really pleased about it and if it hadn’t been for Hospiscare I wouldn’t have done it because I wouldn’t be getting out and about. They are terribly encouraging.

“Hospiscare got me a lovely reclining chair and I can go from my wheelchair to the recliner using my frame and it’s thanks to Hospiscare that I can do that. I’m very happy with Hospiscare, I think they’re marvellous.”

The Midweek Herald, Sidmouth Herald, Exmouth Journal and Cranbrook Herald have joined forces with Hospiscare to launch the East Devon Hospice Appeal to raise £250,000 to complete and run the state-of-the-art day hospice.
