Calls are being renewed for the community to get behind Honiton’s Christmas Lights Appeal as the clock is still ticking to raise in the region of £10,000.

Go Festive, the Christmas lights committee, launched its first major event to boost funds for the appeal.

It has teamed up with The Co-operative in Lace Walk to give one lucky person the chance to win a trolley dash worth £200.

The committee said: “We still need your support. The appeal has a long way to go to achieve our goal of illuminating the High Street for the festive season.

“We need everyone’s support to make this happen.”

The lucky winner of the dash, which is to take place on Saturday, September 27, will have just 30 seconds to fill their trolley. However, electrical items, alcohol and cigarettes are not included.

Honiton Co-operative store manager Mick Alphonse added: “It is a great way to get involved in the community and bring a bit of spirit and excitement to the town.

“It is for Christmas lights and it is a bit of fun to support the area.”

There is £2,000 already available for a Christmas lights display from Honiton Town Council and Lidl, but much more is needed.

The committee said: “We are really excited – this is our first major fundraising event for the appeal and we want everyone to get involved.”

Members thanked the Co-operative for its support in hosting the event.

Support has been growing from businesses in the town for the appeal.

Homebase in Honiton will be providing around 120 artificial trees at a reduced price to the Christmas lights committee for a display in the town this December.

Wendy’s Cookshop in High Street is the latest business to support the appeal - donating a raffle prize to aid fundraising efforts.

A Christmas lights appeal quiz is being held on Saturday, August 23, at Honiton Conservative Club, 7.30pm for 8pm.

Anyone interested in joining the committee, helping with fundraising, or donating raffle prizes is urged to call David Foster on 01404 45106 or email davidofhoniton@yahoo.co.uk

Trolley dash tickets cost £1 and will be available from Go Mobile in New Street.

Committee members will be outside the Co-operative tomorrow (Tuesday) selling tickets for the trolley dash, from 10.30am onwards.
