East Devon District Council has proposed to spend £500,000 to help resolve the village’s flood problems.

There could be light at the end of the tunnel for Feniton as East Devon District Council proposes to spend £500,000 to help resolve long-running flood problems.

The district council could spend the amount over the next two years, putting it towards a £1.6m scheme. The figure has been included in the council’s draft budget proposals.

However, the recommendation is subject to the full council’s approval.

An East Devon District Council spokesman said: “There is major work required to solve flooding issues in Feniton, and our draft budget proposes £500,000 over the next two years. This will not be finally agreed until the council’s budget is set by the full council on February 20.

“This is a long-term approach and more funding will be needed. DEFRA will soon decide whether it will contribute up to £500k and, if so, we will approach the Environment Agency and Devon County Council to try and make up the remaining amount.

“Whilst it’s heartening to have a long-term solution in the offing, we know residents are suffering now and we have several short-term pieces of work lined up in coming weeks.

“This includes working with the county council to survey and clean the village’s culverted watercourse, and clearing ditches near affected properties and below South West Water’s pumping station.”
