Future of Honiton Youth Centre up for discussion

Groups and individuals interested in youth work are invited to come along.

The future of Honiton Youth Centre will be up for discussion.

A meeting is being held on Tuesday, July 15, at Honiton Youth Centre, from 11.30am to 1.30pm, to discuss how organisations in the town could respond to Devon County Council’s (DCC) invitation to communities to run their own facilities.

Groups and individuals interested in youth work are being invited to attend.

Alex Gibson, who is a member of East Devon District Council’s community development team and is organising the meeting, said: “Part of my role is to encourage greater community involvement in projects that improve people’s lives. The purpose of the meeting is to gather together individuals and or organisations who might be interested in running the youth club after DCC has withdrawn its support.

“It will be an opportunity to explain the DCC process for community involvement and talk about options available for the future.”

As part of the savings that Devon has to make following massive reductions in Government funding, the county’s 34 youth centres could be closed or handed over to community or voluntary groups.

It is feared that Honiton Youth Centre could close in October and might not even reopen for half a term when students return to school in September after the summer break.

All interested parties are welcome to attend.
