Former student Will Wallner tells grammar school sixth formers about his guitar playing with Black Sabbath and Deep Purple
A former Colyton Grammar School student who made it big it ‘big’ in the USA as a heavy metal guitarist returned to talk to sixth formers last week.
Will Wallner left the school eight years ago to study music and sound technology at the University of Portsmouth.
After graduating, he moved to Hollywood, where he has lived for the past five years, to study at the Musicians’ Institute.
Since then he has toured with well-known groups in the rock world, including Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, and is currently back in Devon prior to a UK and European tour.
Will talked to the students about his experiences and memories of Colyton, and how he got to where he is now.
He also played his guitar and encouraged them to “always go for the best.”
Will also advised those who have dreams of becoming musicians not to let it get in the way of academic success, because “you always have time to follow your ambitions”.
Speaking of his time at Colyton Grammar, he said: “I am still close with my friends from eight years ago and I have a lot of fond memories of the school.”
