A major new fundraising initiative was launched at the weekend to help ensure the future of Seaton’s historic parish church.

Rising maintenance costs have made it increasingly difficult to maintain the building, say worried officials.

The problems were highlighted during an open day on Saturday when the Friends of St Gregory’s Parish Church was launched.

Amongst the group’s fundraising initiatives is a ‘Sponsor a Stone’ scheme at £10 each.

“All funds raised will be used towards keeping this ancient building in sound repair and available for the use of our Community now, and for generations to come,” said spokeswoman Sharon Bruce, the deputy mayor.

St Gregory’s is hosting an Easter Fair on Saturday April 5.
