Budleigh Salterton residents with knowledge of the Jurassic Coast are being sought to act as ambassadors.

The chairman of the Communities Forum for the Jurassic Coast John Wokersien told town councillors that they needed local knowledge to improve links between the community and the World Heritage Site (WHS).

He also said that a WHS business accreditation scheme, to enable Budleigh businesses to start selling merchandise based on the area, could be started up.

Under the terms of the World Heritage Convention, the United Nations require that a WHS become a ‘function in the life of the community’ - in other words, they must have meaning to the people who live and work around them.

Since 2001 many people have been giving up their time to help publicise the Jurassic Coast, including giving talks, walks, volunteering at events, and picking up beach litter.

Mr Wokersien said: “After a decade of World Heritage Site status, we would like to formally acknowledge the efforts of these individuals by recognising them as ambassadors for the Jurassic Coast. In addition, we would like to recruit new ambassadors.”

He said they would help out at events, talk to businesses about the benefits of the Jurassic Coast, promote the area to tourists, act as expert guides for walks, give talks, volunteer for visitor centres and help organise conservation activities. He added: ““Budleigh Salterton is a gateway town and is on a unique part of the geological scene.”
