A Dunkeswell flying instructor has set his sights on making it into the record books to help raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Jim Greenshields, who works at the Dunkeswell aerodrome, will be attempting two Guinness World Records on April 26.

He hopes to set the record for the most fixed wing aircraft flown solo in one day by one person as well as break the current record for the most tailwheel aircraft flown solo in one day.

Jim was inspired to help the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to children and young people fighting life threatening conditions, after watching videos of wishes being granted by the charity on YouTube. He said: “I wanted to help the Make-A-Wish-Foundation. It was either sit in a bath of beans but as I can fly I thought I would try to do something along those lines.”

The hope is to fly over 30 aircraft, with each plane flown up to 2000ft and back and will mean flying from dawn till dusk.

“We have 26 aircraft already promised but still need more, between 30 and 40 would be ideal, and that’s more than some airforces,” added Jim.

Jim has flown more than 80 types of aircraft from vintage biplanes to modern touring and aerobatic aircraft and has around 9000 hours of flying time, but needs the help and good will of local aircraft owners to lend him the planes to set the record.

The record attempts will require around 10 hours of solid flying. “It will be great fun,” say Jim.

He hopes his record attempts will not only help to boost funds for the charity but also raise awareness of its work. The Make-A-Wish Foundation receives no government funding or lottery grants.
