The local community in Honiton has been remembering those who lost their lives during World War One.

Honiton Armed Forces Day committee joined other members of the public to mark the 100th anniversary of the day Great Britain entered the First World War and held a vigil at the town’s war memorial today (Monday).

Over the next four years the committee will be honouring the 66 men who are featured on the town’s war memorial, which is located outside St Paul’s Church, and others who fought in the war.

The committee together with members of the public paid tribute today to W J Hooper.

The curator of Allhallows Museum, Margaret Lewis, has been carrying out research to find out more about W J Hooper, who is named on the war memorial. Anyone with information is urged to call 01404 44966.

St Paul’s Church is holding a service of readings, music and reflections, lasting approximately an hour, which starts at 8pm.

The Honiton branch of the Royal British Legion has teamed up with Iceland and Plantagenesta: The Family History Shop to mark the 100th anniversary. A World War One display has been on show at the Iceland store in Lace Walk. It will be on display again on Friday.

Honiton Royal British Legion is also doing a collection at the store. All proceeds will go to the Royal British Legion.

On Sunday, August 17, Honiton Town Council is hosting a civic service at St Paul’s Church, at 3pm.
