Honiton pupils win prizes at Devon County Show

Honiton Community College pupils impressed the judges with their pig handling skills during their first outing to the Devon County Show.
Pupils Nathan Keywood, Ryan Flack, Curtis Russell Roe, George Wills and Karina Palmer, with four of the college’s British Lop piglets, had trained hard and prepared well in order to compete at the agricultural show.
Honiton Community College’s director of finance, Gary Wills, who has been involved in the project and accompanied the pupils and the piglets to the event, said: “The students performed extremely well handling and showing the pigs, they also interacted with members of the public explaining all about the breed to all that were interested.
“They also greatly impressed other pig owners with their knowledge and skills.”
The pupils won third and fourth prize in the British Lop boar born in 2014 category and a fourth in the British Lop gilt born in 2014 section. They also came away with the second prize in the British Lop group of three category.
As part of the show the pupils also had to prepare information display boards to describe the breed and how they look after and train the pigs – winning first prize.
Prior to the show, Giles Eustice, the owner of the show champion, gave pupils some useful pointers and advice when they visited his farm in Cornwall.
Mr Wills added: “Giles was so confident in the abilities of the Honiton students that he requested their assistance in showing some of his prized pigs at the show.”
It was also a proud day for Mr Wills, who won the sausage competition. He said: “This was my first attempt at the show and I entered four flavours, traditional pork, marmalade, wild garlic, sage and cider.”
He won first in the traditional section and third and fourth in the flavoured section and won the best in show prize.
Mr Wills hopes to continue with the piglet project at the college.
He said: “I am extremely proud of them and the project has been a complete success. I hope to extend the project further after discussions with the principal and team.”
