There were plenty of hot favourites to chose from at a ferret racing and curry night in Uplyme last week.

Organised by Uplyme and Lyme Regis Horticultural Society the event took place in the village hall.

Ferret handlers Chrissie Rolfe and Stephen Hiley, of the animal care unit at Kingston Maurward College, supported by students Hannah Ring, Clare Bacon and Maxine Larcombe demonstrated great care and knowledge of their tiny charges. Ferrets Speedy Sarah, Roger-the-Dodger, Zara Zoom, Alice, Jacob, Summer and Blossom compensated for what they lacked in racing skills with displays of extreme cuteness, enabling prizes worth over £300 to be won by lucky punters.

Between races Alasdair Marshall, of Spice and Rice, served the 120 guests with a choice from five of his curry menus.

The Horticultural Society’s next meeting is on Wednesday, March 26, with a short annual general meeting at 7.30pm followed by a talk at 8pm from Nick Rigden, head of horticulture at Cannington College.

His illustrated talk ‘Making the Most of Veg’ is designed to inspire his audience to grow their own fresh crops – whether in a big garden or just a few planters – and will confirm that producing vegetables is as satisfying as it is healthy.

Nick has been involved in horticultural education for over 40 years and is a senior examiner for the Royal Horticultural Society. His broad knowledge and practical experience of gardening, exhibiting and judging brings natural authority to his talks.

Afterwards there will be an opportunity to ask questions and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and home-made cake. Admission is free to members, £3 for non-members.
