Never-before-seen pictures to be sold.
A trip to a monthly book fair in London has unearthed three never-before-seen photographs of Honiton.
Graham York, who has traded in rare books from High Street in Honiton for 30 years, made the discovery. He was in London to buy and sell books when he chanced upon a Victorian photo album, uncovered during a house clearance.
“I always look at Victorian albums, because they are interesting,” he said. “I buy them, if I can afford them. I saw this one and it had photographs in it of Honiton that I have never seen before.”
Two of the pictures depict St Paul’s Church, one showing its former black railings and the other a rare interior shot. The third photograph is of High Street, taken from an unusual angle.
Mr York said: “I don’t know who the photographer was, but there are some pictures of Exeter in the album dated 1872.
“This is really early for photographs and they were probably taken by a very wealthy tourist or a keen photographer.”
Mr York intends to sell the contents of the album.
He said: “I am undecided on whether or not I should break it up.
“The Honiton pictures really need to stay in Honiton.”
