Lyme Regis woman’s Great Wall challenge

A mother from Lyme Regis is fundraising to walk the Great Wall of China so she can fulfil a promise she made to her dying mother.

Janet Barrett-Pearce, 60, of Poole’s Court, needs to raise £3,300 to make the May trip – sponsored by the Marie Curie Foundation – become a reality.

She made the promise when her mother Rita said she would like to do the trip herself while under the charity’s care.

“My mum had Burkitt’s lymphoma,” said Janet. “It is a rare form of cancer and she died very quickly after she was diagnosed.

“We were in the Marie Curie hospice when saw an advertisement for the trek. She said it looked amazing so I said I would do it for her.”

Rita died shortly after on April 26, and Janet is now appealing to the community to help her fundraise for the trip.

She has raised £200 so far and if she makes her total will make the journey on May 9.

While she is on her journey, she will scour local trails to experience the rural life of people in the Hebei Province.

Janet will also get to explore Beijing, Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City as well as a shopping experience in the silk market.

She will spend four days walking eight to nine hours, and the remainder spread between six to four hours.

“I am really excited,” said Janet. “My mum was a very active lady and would have loved to do this.

“I have been training by walking up and down Lyme Regis’s hills.”

Donations to Janet’s trek can be made through collection tins at Penny Black Café, Art Shop, Aroma Café, Cinderella [dress shop]and Serendip [book shop] in Lyme Regis.

She has also set up an online fundraising page, visit: www.justgiving.com/Janet-Barratt-Pearce.
