Exmouth town clerk John Wokersien has been chosen to attend a Diamond Jubilee celebration after being named as an unsung hero of the town.

His name was put forward by town councillors to attend celebrations at Exeter Cathedral on May 27.

Town and parish councils across Devon have been invited to nominate an unsung hero to attend, and councillors felt that the town clerk deserved the recognition.

John (pictured) will be attending the celebration with his wife Sue, and said: “I think it’s a great honour. Me and my wife are both delighted to be asked to attend, and I appreciate that councillors feel it’s appropriate to nominate us.”

Councillors said that they felt John, who is retiring at the end of the month, deserved the award in particular for his charity work with the Rotary Club of Exmouth and Exmouth Shanty Men.

He said: “The Rotary Club of Exmouth does some fantastic work raising money for charity, and I’ve been lucky enough to be involved with them, and will continue to be involved.

“With the Shanty Men, our biggest achievement this year was to directly raise £5,000 for a Christian Aid project in Zimbabwe, which has been multiplied by the EU to make £50,000, and I’m really proud to be a part of that.”

Exmouth Mayor Sandy Sutton said: “Councillors felt our unsung hero should be John Wokersien, for his charity work and, as he’s retiring, I think it’s a very nice gesture.”
