A Honiton woman has returned home after a ‘life changing’ trip helping to make a difference to the lives of children in Ghana.

Kirsty Sanders spent six months volunteering at the Buokrom Primary school – teaching subjects like English, science and maths.

“It was a life changing experience for me. I got to know myself. It has made me more determined to go on to do teaching,” says the 21-year-old. “I loved it. I would go back tomorrow.”

During her time in Ghana, Kirsty taught the Year 1 class, where pupils’ ages ranged between five and 16.

However, there were some big differences at the school. One of these was the use of the cane, which was quite difficult for Kirsty to get used to. The other was the huge class sizes, which could be up to 63 children.

She also worked in the kindergarten for two weeks and during the Easter holidays volunteered at Kumasi Children’s Home for four weeks taking care of the orphaned children.

Prior to her volunteering trip Kirsty was given generous donations from the local community of stationery, colouring books and other items to give to the children, which were gratefully received by her school class.

With the donated money Kirsty was able to buy a mattress and mosquito net for a group of disabled orphans at the children’s home and school uniforms for a number of the children who could not afford them and would have faced not being able to go to school. She also bought mesh to protect the windows of the school.

Kirsty also gained a qualification in teaching English as a foreign language and hopes to teach abroad in Asia. She added: “I want to thank everyone who donated pens, pencils and other equipment and money. It helped me to change the lives of quite a few families.”
