A whopping £14,000 was raised for local causes in Honiton at a fundraising auction.

The event at the Thelma Hulbert Gallery (THG), Dowell Street, was in aid of Honiton Memory Café, Honiton Hospital League of Friends and the THG Learning Programme.

Local artists, including emerging talent such as Brittany Lakin, who is a student at Honiton Community College, and prominent names including Alan Cotton and Irene Jones, kindly donated 45 artworks to be auctioned.

Sue Holland, of Honiton Memory Café, said: “We are absolutely thrilled with this total. The funds will be split equally between the two charities and the THG learning programme, and will make a huge difference to the work with dementia that each organisation can now fund.”

Duncan Chilcott, from Chilcotts auctioneers, expertly led the auction. Bids came from as far afield as Cambridge and London and many had travelled some distance to bid for their favourite work.

Honiton Memory Café will use the funds to focus on support for the carers and cared-for through respite care, overnight breaks, counselling and further volunteer training.

And Honiton Hospital League of Friends will put its funds towards making the hospital more dementia-friendly while the THG will use the money raised to help with its learning programme including expanding their successful activities for those living with dementia and their carers.

The donated artworks formed part of the gallery’s Recollection exhibition, which explored the theme of memory and memory loss.
