Keep an eye out for Honiton’s newest civic leader who is looking forward the year ahead - especially now he has got a posh new outfit.

The Mayor’s Bear has been taking the town by storm and has now been kitted out with some new mayoral robes, including his own piece of Honiton Lace and a mayor’s chain.

Honiton Mayor, Councillor David Foster, said: “He seems to be enjoying it and is a very happy Mayor’s Bear. We are both looking forward to the year ahead.”

The special bear will be spending a week with pupils at Honiton Primary School to help them understand more about the role played by a mayor as part of their citizenship programme.

Cllr Foster, added: “I hope he can develop and be used as a way to promote Honiton as a family-friendly place.

“Football clubs have mascots so why not a town.”

Anyone who would like to request their attendance or has any ideas for the mayor’s bear can contact the town council on 01404 42957.

The mayor’s bear is still looking for a name. Suggestions can be emailed to katy.griffin@archant.co.uk or Katy Griffin, The Midweek Herald, Fair Oak Close, Exeter Airport Business Park, Clyst Honiton, Exeter, EX5 2UL.
