Minster set to reopen after fire

Axminster’s historic Minster Church is preparing to reopen following the devastating fire.

Specialist cleaners, called in after the arson attack on March 6, have now left and officials say things should be back to normal by this weekend, with all traces of the smoke damage removed.

Assistant churchwarden Jennifer Royle said that all regular church bookings, activities and services will resume from Sunday, April 13.

“However, due to the constraints of insurance requirements and recommendations, for the short term only, the building will be subject to restricted opening,” she said.

“In addition, some tasks remain such as the dismantling and cleaning of the organ, fire damage repairs and redecoration of the building which will inevitably cause some disruption for a considerable time.”

Details of services, starting with Palm Sunday, on April 13, and throughout Holy Week until Easter Day celebrations will be displayed on the notice boards.

Immediately after Easter, on April 22, the important annual parish church meeting will take place to elect churchwardens and other officers and for reports on the preceding year’s activities.

Meanwhile, Mrs Royle said work on the important ‘Minster Makeover’ plans continue in earnest as the church once again resumes its welcoming role in the heart of Axminster.
